THE BRIEF HISTORY OF ONOGIDI 1 OF AFRICA
The Onogidi masquerade is a revered and ancient masquerade in Ebira land, with a rich history dating back centuries.
Aneku Onogidi is believed to have originated from a specific village in Kabba called Ogidi, where the spiritual material for the masquerade was found. The name "Onogidi" is derived from this village, and "Aneku" refers to ancestors. The masquerade is considered a deity that requires no additional charms or spiritual boosts from individuals.
Onogidi is known for its spiritual strength, healing abilities, and power to rescue people from evil bondage. Barren women who seek its blessings often conceive after visiting the masquerade, and their children are sometimes named after it - "Ogidi" for males and "Onyi Onogidi" for females. The Onogidi masquerade plays a vital role in Ebira cultural festivals, such as the Eche'ane festival, where it appears on stage to bless and entertain the crowd.
Its presence is accompanied by traditional songs and dances, highlighting its importance in Ebira traditions. The masks and costumes worn by Onogidi are considered sacred and should not be touched by ordinary individuals.
The masquerade is believed to represent the ancestors and holds significant spiritual power, surpassing that of witches and wizards.Onogidi has several praise names, including Ichapaniko, Muwo-Muwo Anee'se, Odopochi-Okaha, and others, which reflect its strength, spiritual power, and cultural significance.
